oy/oi: as in boy, oil
Two vowels together that make a new sound are called a diphthong. This week we will work with diphthong oy/oi as in the words boy and oil. Oy is usually, but not always, found at the end of a word, while oi comes in the middle.
Practice the words everyday and soon you will know how to read and write them. This is what we do on our whiteboards in class. Students can use i-pad Notes to write the words.
Dear Family, Read the following while your student writes the words.
Start with the word boy. Say boy. Listen for the oy sound. Write boy. Read boy.
Change the b to t and you have toy. Say toy. Write toy. Read toy.
Change the t to a j and you have joy. Say joy. Write joy. Read joy.
Put an en onto the beginning and you have enjoy. Say enjoy. Write enjoy. Read enjoy.
Change the en to r and you have the name Roy. Say Roy. Write Roy. Read Roy.
Here are two words where oy is not at the end of the word. Say the word royal. A king is royal. Say royal. Write royal. Read royal.
Change the r to an l and now you have loyal. Say loyal. Write loyal. Read loyal.
Oi also makes the same sound as oy.
Try the word oil. Say oil. Write oil. Read oil.
Add an s to oil and you have soil. Say soil. Write soil. read soil. Soil is dirt.
Add an sp and you have spoil. When food spoils it is not good to eat. Say spoil. Write spoil. Read spoil.
Change the sp to b and you boil. Boiling water makes steam. Say boil. Write boil. Read boil.
Add a br blend and you have broil. Broiling is a way to cook. You broil hamburgers. Say broil. Write broil. Read broil.
Change br to c and you have coil. When rope is piled into a circle it is in a coil. Say coil. Write coil. Read coil.
Change the l to an n and you have coin. Say coin. Write coin. Read coin.
Change the c to a j and you have join. Say join. Write join. Read join.

Review sheet: contractions. Remember contractions are when two words are made into one new word. Look at the first word, it does not change, did not---didn't. The second word loses letters that are replaced with an apostrophe (') then the two words are made into a new, shorter word. do not---don't.
