First Graders need to know the names of coins and their value. Use these pictures to help you. When you are talking about the value of coins, use the word cents and the symbol is the letter c with a line through it. Pennies are counted by 1s. Nickels are counted by 5s and dimes are counted by 10s. A quater is worth twenty five cents and there are four quarters in one dollar. So a quarter is 1/4 of a dollar. Fractions!!! When you are counting coins you first need to sort them. Put the pennies together, the nickels together, the dimes together and the quarters together. Always start counting with the coins that are worth the most. If you have dimes and pennies, you start with the dimes. Count by 10s then count on the 1s. For example, if you have six dimes and four pennies, you would count 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, then 61, 62, 63, 64. You have 64 cents all together. When you are drawing money in your workbook just draw a circle and write the number value. A dime would be a circle with a 10 in it. To practice counting money, have someone at home put a handful of coins (change) onto the table, then sort the coins and count them. Soon it will be quick and easy!
