R controlled vowels: ar as in star, car, part, mark
The letter R changes the sound of vowels. This week we will work on ar which sounds like the letter name r. Say the word car. You hear only the c and the r but you know that it must also have a vowel.

Practice the words everyday and soon you will know how to read and write them. This is what we do on our whiteboards in class. Students can use i-pad Notes to write the words.
Dear Family, Read the following while your student writes the words:
Start with the word car, c-a-r. Say car. Write car. Read car.
Change the c to a j and now you have jar. Say jar. Write jar. Read jar.
Change the j to st and you have star. Say star. Write star. Read star.
Add a t to the end of star and you have start. It means to begin. Say start. Write start. Read start.
Change the st to a ch and you have chart. Say chart. Write chart. Read chart. We read our poems on charts.
Change the ch to a p and you have part. Say part. Write part. Read part.
Change the ending t to a k and you have park. Say Park. Write park. Read park.
Change the p to a d and you have dark. Say dark. Write dark. Read dark.
If you practice this with ar words several times a week, your student will improve quickly. If your student needs the lesson to go more slowly, then slow it down. It's practice.
